ENG: Government debt (also known as sovereign debt) represents the total amount of money that a sovereign country’s government has borrowed to finance budget deficits and public expenditures. This debt is primarily accumulated by issuing debt securities—such as government bonds and treasury bills—to domestic and international investors, or through direct loans from commercial banks and multilateral institutions like the IMF or World Bank. The overall level of government debt and the country’s ability to service it directly impact its credit rating, the cost of future borrowing, and general macroeconomic stability.
